Programme Description

Through a combination of theory and hands-on training, the Fiber Optics Engineering Diploma students learn how communications networks are designed, constructed and operated. Graduates will be able to analyse, specify, design networks, services, processes and applications of telecommunications in fixed, local or long distance, with different bandwidths in IP over Optical Networks. In addition, graduates of this programme will have the ability to apply both traffic engineering tools as planning tools, dimensioning and network analysis as well as the ability to examine, model and implement new architectures, network protocols and communication interfaces and new network services and applications.

Criteria for Admission

The Entry Level Requirement for the programme consists of the following:

Five (5) O-Level (or equivalent) passes including Mathematics (CXC grade I or II / GCE grade A or B), English (CXC grade I, II or III / GCE grade A, B or C), and a Science Subject – preferably Physics (CXC General Proficiency – grade I, II or III / GCE equivalent grade A, B or C).

Students who fail to meet the above entry requirements can gain entry through:

  • Diploma in Electrical Electronic Engineering from approved Caribbean Tertiary Level Institutions with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5 and above.


  •  Mature Entry Route (21 years and over) with at least three years related work experience.

Target Audience / Student Profile

This programme targets individuals both local and international and industry professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in Fiber Optics Engineering. A minimum class size of 15 students is necessary for the programme to run economically.
